Organiser’s Comments

Thank you all for coming to the Furrow Hoppers. There were 17 teams on the day, and we hope you enjoyed your day.

Ringwood North, particularly the North West part, is a physically tough and technical area and we did our best to plan 4 courses that would be reasonably fair for the wide range of experience and fitness amongst competitors. You might find it hard to believe but, apart from the recent barcken growth, we used the best areas available. Truly, the ‘Furrow Hoppers’ was well named this year! Map Memory and Line courses are always tricky simply because none of us do them very often (thank goodness!) and some of you found them rather difficult. Our apologies for that but we hope you’ll come back again next year to try again!

We are indebted to John Warren, not only for producing the larger scale map which was so much better to work with, but also for his help and advice with planning the courses.

SI Team’s Comments.

When the SI team proposed to use SI for the Furrow Hoppers Relay there was some reasonable doubt by members of the club as to whether we could adapt SI to the unique format of the race. However, some lateral thinking later, both Simon and I came to the same conclusion that by using the same dibber for all three laps of courses we could cope – the only real limitations being the number of controls on a lap (dibbers will only hold 30 timedpunches and a few more untimed) and some difficulty with a score event which led to the Line course.

As you will have realised the ‘Start’ control for laps 2 & 3 was, like the ‘Changeover’ control, simply included so that there was a structure to the race and also so that we were able to give accurate running times for each lap, - something we have not been able to do in the past when ‘waiting time’ has been included in the outgoing runner’s time.

Some interesting facts visible from the use of SI are the differences between teams in waiting times. Those teams with small waiting times show good planning and accurate predictions of runner’s likely lap times. The other interesting fact is that SOC1 ( the winning team) and Wimborne2 ( 2nd place) were last off and first off respectively, – which seems to indicate that our handicap allowances are pretty accurate.

My grateful thanks to Simon for his programme which has taken much of the work out of calculating the individual running times and thus has meant that the results could be produced quickly without many hours of spreadsheet calculations.

My sincere apologies to the Chocolate Fireguards (SARUM) for my failure to clear the dibber that replaced the one dropped on lap1 of the Line course. This has meant that at present we cannot provide splits and lap times for this course for them.

Finally, we hope you agree that using SI has added an extra dimension to a fun event and hopefully we can use the same format again in the future.
